Where was WCKC: The Zoo, Lilac Hedge & More

Where was WCKC This Week? August 8-August 14

Where in Central MA was WCKC This Week: This series will feature what we did this week, tips & tricks, what we enjoyed, what was a miss and more. We hope this will help you find places to go in Central MA this summer! (And yes the title of the series is meant to be sung to the tune of “Where in the World is Carmen San Diego”). We will include anything that we think is family-friendly and fun in the area or within a drivable distance to Worcester, MA.

August 8 – August 14
Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon

We went to Southwick’s Zoo for the first time this year and there were so many changes! The playground has moved and has all brand new equipment. There is a new carousel and some of the animal habitats have moved as well. The biggest noticeable difference was that they were setting up for Festival of Illumination, so many of the decorations were already on the display. We enjoyed visiting with the animals, riding the train, and drinking slushies on a hot day. The girls fed the deer in the deer forest. And we are looking forward to going back this fall to see the entire set up for Festival of Illumination.
Free Concert Series

We went to the Free Concert Series in Paxton to listen to Petty Larceny do covers of Tom Petty songs. It was a beautiful evening with yummy snacks from the snack shack. The concerts are every Thursday night in the summer at the bandstand in the center of town. Many other towns in the area offer free concert series like East Brookfield, Leicester and others – check our calendar for dates and times.

Lilac Hedge Farm: Dinner & Ice Cream

We enjoyed a delicious farm fresh dinner at Lilac Hedge Farm. The chicken bacon ranch pizza and the burger were both fantastic. The fries were hot and crispy. My husband had a Seven Saws beer and I had a margarita from the Farm bar. The girls ate ice cream while we walked around the property visiting the animals: emu, ostriches, goats and more. Their one year birthday is this week! And they are celebrating with a family movie night on Thursday and face painting and live music this weekend. It’s a great weekend to visit this gem of a spot.
