EcoTarium Speak Series: Astrophysics
June 9 @ 5:00 pm - 5:30 pm
$7
Speaker: Ian Stephens, Worcester State University
June 9
5:00 pm – 5:30 pm
Stars form from the collapse of dense clouds made of dust. The collapse is a complex interplay of different forces, including gravity, turbulence, magnetic fields, and radiation. Gravity eventually wins and a “baby star” or protostar is formed, which is surrounded by a disk that will eventually become a solar system.
In this talk Ian Stephens will highlight some of the key recent discoveries in star and planet formation, with a focus specifically on telescope observations from the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) and Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA).
