Rhode Island Parrot Rescue (11:00 am–1:30 pm)
“Life in Captivity” with Rhode Island Parrot Rescue will explore the habitats, behaviors, and lifestyles of parrots from around the world, highlighting how these highly intelligent and social animals live in the wild. There is a growing captive parrot crisis led by impulse purchasing, long parrot lifespans, behavioral challenges, rehoming, and rescue overcrowding. While caregivers and rescues can and do attempt to meet physical and psychological needs in captivity, there are limitations to captivity: Even well cared-for parrots cannot fully replicate the freedom and stimulation of life in the wild. Through empathy and responsible ownership, RIPR encourages deeper understanding of parrots as complex wild animals in captivity rather than traditional pets.
