Exploring doesn’t need to break the bank, so we have compiled a list of free things to do with kids (or without) when you are ready to adventure.
We’ve broken the list into sections of the state. After you’ve experienced the free things to do near you, you can venture out to other parts of our beautiful state! And if you find something incredible that isn’t on our list, please drop us a line, we’d love to share our readers discoveries too so that others can enjoy!
Central MA
The Shrewsbury Secret Garden
An adventure so awesome, we hope you don’t keep it a secret! You will find statues, sculptures, inspiring quotes and so much more. If there is a breeze, you will hear the wind chimes. The main trail takes you from one Shrewsbury neighborhood along a pond to another neighborhood. If you aren’t paying attention, you will miss the side trail (near the bridge) that takes you to a friendly forest of paths and friends. We loved the crushed colorful glass that covered the forest floor in this section. The pretty sight and the sounds of the crunch were such a surprise. Most of the trail is bike and stroller friendly.
Green Hill Park, Worcester
Visit the barnyard animals, play at the playground and courts, have a picnic! Although the park is open 7 days from dawn to dusk, the barnyard is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
Visit Bancroft Tower, Worcester
Bancroft Tower – a 56-foot-high natural stone and granite tower, which looks like a castle. It is located in Salisbury Park in Worcester. It was built in 1900, in memory of George Bancroft. George Bancroft was born in Worcester in 1800. He was a renowned 19th-century historian, statesman, and diplomat known as the “father of American history”.
Summer Out to Lunch Festivals, Worcester Common
Each Wednesday from mid June – late August from 11 am – 3 pm you can visit the Worcester Common for live music, games, meet with community organizations and more! There are also food trucks and a farmers market for purchases.

On select evenings each summer, you can pack your blankets and chairs with snacks and enjoy family movies under the stars!

Explore Purgatory Chasm, Sutton
Purgatory Chasm is a unique natural landmark offering exciting adventure. Follow trails to rock formations. The Chasm Loop Trail has the rock formations this state park is famous for. Small caves, huge rocks to climb over and around, and beautiful scenes as you work your way down the chasm. This is a short trail only .5 miles, and it is very doable with a family. The Charley Loop and others are a bit longer. See their free family friendly events here: Purgatory Chasm Events. Please note, although free, there is a small fee to park. ($5 for MA residents, higher for non-residents).
Clark University Hadwen Arboretum, Worcester

26 Acres of forest with 2km+ of trails located on ancestral land of the Nipmuc Nation. All in the heart of Worcester. Follow to the end and you will reach Coe’s Park for swimming and a playground.

Explore Moore State Park, Paxton
We love Moore State Park in any season. Several trails to choose from. Great for picture-taking. (As on June 3, 2026, the park is partially closed due to storm damage. Check with Mass DCR for reopening).
Summer Concerts in the Park
There are so many live summer concerts with local bands throughout the season. We especially like THESE listed on our website. Many are located at playgrounds or ice cream venues.
Fitchburg Art Museum Free First Thursdays
First Thursday and the accompanying FAM at Night will be held every first Thursday of the month. Free Admission for all visitors from Noon – 7 pm. From 3 – 5:30 PM, shop at the Fitchburg Farmers’ Market.
Free Canoeing on Bell Pond, Worcester
184 Belmont St
Drop in canoeing will take place at Bell Pond from 4-7 pm on Tuesdays between 7/14-8/11. Canoeing is “first come, first serve” and free. All equipment is provided and participants under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. This program is presented by Mass Audubon and supported by the DCR Summer Nights program.

The Ski Park provides a free wintertime recreational opportunity for both classic and skate skiing in a beautiful, historic public space. It is the only groomed, public-access cross-country ski venue in Central MA. No rentals available.

Middlesex and MetroWest
Discovery Museum, Acton
Friday nights from June 19 – Sept. 4 (Oct – June Free Friday Nights are on the First Friday of the Month)
Did you know that each Friday Evening all summer long the Discovery Museum offers free admission after 4:30 pm. Arrive any time and stay until 8 pm. Reservations are not required or accepted. It’s a great evening to explore Discovery Woods and their amazing treehouse!
Acton Arboretum, Acton

Open Daily Dawn to Dusk. The Acton Arboretum is located on 65 acres of town conservation land in the center of Acton.
You’ll find many trails through meadows, along woodland ponds, and through a bog. A handicapped accessible trail provides access to many of the beautiful gardens.
Bancroft’s Castle, Groton
Bancroft’s Castle, a 1906 stone ruin is located on top of Gibbet Hill in Groton.. It was built by General William Bancroft, to be his retirement home. He named it “Shawfieldmont”. But he never completed his home due to running out of money. It subsequently became a sanatorium in 1920 before burning in 1932. It is now a public conservation land popular for hiking and photography. Since 2000, the “castle” and trails became part of Groton’s protected open space and was opened to the public. Garden in the Woods Framingham
The main path through the Garden is a mile-long loop with a crushed-gravel surface, requiring about an hour to an hour and a half to walk. There is a visitors center with restrooms. Native plants are for sale in the visitors center.
Cushing Memorial Park, Framingham
Spend an afternoon at this beautiful 67 acre park with playgrounds, picnic areas, paved trails, and gardens. Was once a military hospital.
Lake Williams Trail & Boardwalk, Framingham
The 1.5-mile-long trail loop runs through shady woods near the lake shore and across wetlands on a 1/2+ mile of floating boardwalk with views of the water and birds. Parking is at the Marlborough District Court parking lots. The Marlborough District Court parking lots should only be used after 4:30 pm on weekdays and can be used during the duration of the weekend. The Botanic Garden of Smith College spans 127 acres and includes the 12,000 square foot Lyman Conservatory, Church Gallery, arboretum and many outdoor gardens.

Open Wednesday – Sunday 9 am – 5 pm May through early June when the fish are migrating. “The Fishway is staffed by knowledgeable and friendly guides who will share information about anadromous fish and restoration efforts. Underwater viewing windows offer visitors of all ages a chance to see migratory fish during their upriver journey to spawn. American shad and sea lamprey can often be seen swimming by the windows. A short walk along the scenic canal side bike path, offers views of the spillway fish ladder. The Visitor Center is adjacent to the Turners Falls Bike Path and our Unity Park picnic area on the shores of the Connecticut River.”

On the shores of the CT River is a great playground for kids. Bring the bikes and ride along the river on the Canalside Rail Trail to get an up close view of the river and dam.
Poet’s Seat Tower, Greenfield
You can climb all the way to the top of the tower and enjoy the views! Bring a picnic to enjoy.
Bridge of Flowers, Shelburne Falls
Built in 1908, the Bridge connects the towns of Buckland and Shelburne Falls. This seasonal footbridge was once a trolley bridge. Spend the afternoon admiring the beautiful flowers, shopping in the local stores and stopping at the glacial potholes, located just steps away. (See below)

These amazing historic potholes in the Deerfield River are a sight! There is also a beautiful waterfall. Swimming is no longer allowed here.

Ashuwillticook Trail
An old railroad track converted into a 10-foot wide paved trail. The trail runs almost 13 miles through the towns of Cheshire, Lanesborough and Adams. Beautiful views of the Cheshire Reservoir and the Hoosic River and their wildlife. Parking lots and restrooms are available at selected locations along the way.

At 3,491 feet, Mount Greylock is the highest point in Massachusetts. From its peak on a clear day, you can see as far as 90 miles away. No matter when you visit, there’s plenty to do and see. Boston Public Garden
Take an adventure to see the trees, flowers, lagoons, monuments and more. Often find entertainers performing throughout the garden. The garden is free, however there is a small fee to ride the swan boats. See the garden map HERE

Frog Pond Spray Pool at Boston Common
Typically opens in mid June. They have events at the Frog Pond throughout the year, but the spray pool is a family favorite! The Frog Pond Cafe is open during spray pool and winter skate seasons. The carousel has a fee of $4 pp. Please note that skating is fee – based for kids over 12 and adults. The Boston Public Library offers free skate and rentals during special events.

We couldn’t do this feature and not mention the historic Boston Public Library at Copley Square. “Established in 1848, the Boston Public Library is a pioneer of public library service in America. Freedom Trail, Boston
Learn about Boston and U.S History along this 2 1/2 mile trail that covers 16 historic locations. Self guided tour is free or you can purchase a guided tour. Easy to follow route. Learn a lot about the history of our state house on Beacon Hill. They have a Kids’ Zone with trivia and games. Keep in mind that the State House is only open on weekdays. Free

Walk the Black Heritage Trail (Tours)
Hours: Wednesday – Sunday at 10 am and 1 pm
Join a park ranger for a Black Heritage Trail tour. Registration is required. Recommended for ages 8+.Tours last 60 – 90 minutes. Tour begins at the Massachusetts 54th Regiment across the street from the Massachusetts State House and ends at the Museum of African American History, covering about 1.4 miles.

These three museums are part of Harvard University. The oldest of the three, Fogg Museum, dates back to 1895. Stop by the visitor center on arrival for kids activities like scavenger hunts, question cards and sketch books. Walk or bike this 3.5-mile paved loop. It features sculptures, local gardens, and beautiful views of the Merrimack River.
Ocean Spray Cranberry Bog & Nature Trail, Foxborough

“The trail is home to the last remaining active cranberry bog in the town of Foxborough. Visitors will enjoy witnessing the Ocean Spray Cranberry Bog as it comes to life. Visitors will learn about the life cycle of a cranberry and educational facts about the bog when they visit the 16-acre site. The seven acres of bogs at The Nature Trail and Ocean Spray Cranberry Bog at Patriot Place are real, functioning bogs. They were originally planted in 1929 and have been cultivated by growers ever since!”

Known as one of the best playgrounds in Mass. Large playground, nature area with a fairy garden, spraypark, and mini golf. This park can get busy and the City of Waltham asks that families limit their time at the park to 2 hours.

Cape Cod
Take a Lighthouse Tour

Catch a Cape Cod Baseball League Game, 10 Cape Cod Locations
Free admission to their summertime evening games. Fun for the whole family! Kids can meet and get autographs after the game. Games run mid-June to mid-August. 10 Locations on the cape!

Sandwich Fish Hatchery

If you are in the Sandwich area, escape the crowds and stop by the hatchery for a look at the fish. Bring some quarters if you want to feed the fish. This is a quick 15-20 minute activity.

Open free to the public to visit the farm animals. They also host farmers markets and festivals seasonally.
Visit Provincetown
Explore the sandy beaches, walk the docks to find wildlife, tour the art galleries and charming shops, visit the library (see events), known for the schooner inside. You can take a walking tour of the famous replica of the Rose Dorothea schooner.
Go Beachcombing:
Best spots for beachcombing: Sandy Neck (Sandwich), Tidal Flats (Dennis & Brewster)
Best spots for sunsets: Mayflower and Corporation Beaches (both in Dennis) and Gray’s Beach (Yarmouth Port)
In season, parking is free after 5 p.m. at most town managed and National Seashore beaches on Cape Cod. Off-season, beach parking is free all the time.

Chatham has built beautiful wide platforms for viewing the fisherman and seals. Stop by on a Friday – Sunday from 10 am – 1 pm (Late June – October) and stay for a free Pier Host Program. Experienced fisherman chat with visitors on the deck to talk about their experiences and answer questions.

A beautiful 1/4 mile (each way) wooden boardwalk over the salt marsh. Great for viewing wildlife. Plenty of benches along the way. Popular spot to take photos at sunset. Parking is free from the day after Labor Day to the day before Memorial Day. Summertime parking for non-residents of Yarmouth is about $20/car. Swimming, picnic area and seasonal restrooms on site.
